“Drinking alcohol even in moderation — a large glass of wine or a pint of beer a day — can increase the risk of developing bowel cancer by 10 per cent, a Europe-wide study has found. And drinking to two pints a day or around two large glasses of wine increases the risk by up to a quarter. About 35,000 new cases of bowel cancer are diagnosed in the UK each year, claiming the lives of 16,100 people annually. The average lifetime risk for bowel cancer is one in 20 for men and one in 18 for women.” (07/30/07)
