“Providing access to quality health care for our children is one of the best investments we can make for our country’s future. In threatening to veto reauthorization of the State Children’s Health Insurance Program, known as CoverKids in Tennessee, President Bush has lost sight of this fact. SCHIP has been overwhelmingly responsible for lowering the number of uninsured children in the U.S. since it began in 1997, despite the trend in the opposite direction for adults. Today, SCHIP provides necessary healthcare coverage to more than 6 million children in the U.S. who do not qualify for Medicaid and whose parents cannot afford private insurance. As many as 127,000 children in Tennessee are uninsured, so one child in every 10 attends school with no health coverage. CoverKids is working to close the healthcare gap for many of Tennessee’s uninsured children.” [editor’s note: Article may be a bit biased since Dr. Willis happens to be the Director of CoverKids - SAT] (07/31/07)
