Schools defy order to close

“Administrators, teachers, parents and students at Osprey and Sawgrass charter schools became vigilantes of sorts, opening their doors for classes Wednesday and bucking a Brevard County School Board decision that demanded the sister schools close. But the schools are in limbo — they no longer can be considered a public school, supported by taxpayer funds, and refuse to become a private school. It was unclear where the money to continue operating was coming from. ‘We are a charter school,’ said Rosie Morales, director of Academies of Excellence, the nonprofit company that runs the two schools. ‘We will go through the appeal process, and we are confident that we will be successful.’” (08/30/07)
