“As Congress and the White House wrestle this week over the spending bills necessary to keep government running, any new spending initiatives may get pushed aside. But when a spending initiative is an incentive to health and healthcare savings in the long term for many Americans, it merits serious consideration. The Healthy Workforce Act of 2007 is just such a proposal. The bill, sponsored by U.S. Sens. Tom Harkin, D-Iowa, and Gordon Smith, R-Ore., would give tax incentives for businesses to implement workplace health-management programs. With tax credits of up to $200 per employee for the first 200 employees, and up to $100 per employee thereafter, the financial incentive to companies could be significant. If approved, the bill could help turn the tide both in spiraling healthcare costs and in illnesses that are preventable by lifestyle. Why bring employers into the health equation? The incentives simply are more effective, and more easily measurable, than giving the tax break to the individual. Businesses not only would receive the tax credit, but can expect improved worker productivity if the wellness programs are followed.” (09/27/07)
