“Paul G. Vallas deserves accolades for confronting the myriad challenges of the New Orleans Recovery School District and for approaching the work with courage, commitment and vision (’A Tamer of Troubled Schools Offers a Plan for New Orleans,’ news article, Sept. 24). The strategy he describes, responding to the academic and non-academic needs of students to facilitate their school success, has proved to be effective here in New York and in cities across the country. This strategy works because it organizes the resources of community partners around the needs of children and their families, making schools the centers of their neighborhoods.” (10/01/07)
