Our unsanitary hospitals

“Hospitals in the United States should be held to the same sanitary standards that our restaurants are held, says Betsy McCaughey, former lieutenant governor of New York, and founder and chairman of the Committee to Reduce Infection Deaths. The consequences of inadequate hygiene are far deadlier in hospitals than in restaurants, says McCaughey: * The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimate that 2,500 people die each year after picking up a food-borne illness in a restaurant or prepared food store. * Forty times that number — 100,000 people — die each year, according to the CDC, from infections contracted in healthcare facilities.” (11/29/07)
