“What do illegal immigrants and pro athletes have in common? They’ve both discovered the life-giving properties of a drink meant for sick babies. Infant rehydration solutions such as Pedialyte are the latest craze in locker rooms, replacing drinks such as Gatorade for some thirsty athletes. But Pedialyte, along with its Mexican competitor, Electrolit, is also flying off the shelves in Sonoran border towns where migrants prepare for their illegal treks across the Arizona desert. The PH Super Tienda in Altar sells 200 cases, or about 2,400 bottles, of solution every week during the winter months, said manager Marco Antonio Santana. During the summer, sales rise to about 6,000 bottles a week, he said. The powdered version of Electrolit is also a big seller.” (12/26/07)
