“I was amazed to read that the Albany Board of Education members have not yet figured out why there is an enormous ‘exodus’ from the city school district to the charter schools that are cropping up and flourishing throughout the city. If the problem is simply one of a negative ‘perception’ as one school board member puts it, we must have a major marketing campaign aimed at improving the reputation of the schools. A few public service announcements won’t do the job. If the problem is that the school district is indeed crime ridden and ineffective, it is time to overhaul the entire system and it is time for severe change at the top of the ladder.” (01/31/08)
