“A new state commission could begin authorizing more tuition-free charter schools next year and give parents more educational choices for their children. After a lengthy, sometimes heated discussion Thursday, the state House of Representatives voted 119-48 to create the Georgia Charter Schools Commission. For 2 1/2 hours, lawmakers debated the merits of House Bill 881, with some arguing that the measure would improve public education in Georgia and others warning that charter schools are no panacea for the state’s educational ills.” (02/01/08)
