Chemo drugs may boost death risk

“Drugs designed to treat a common side effect of chemotherapy may increase the risk of death, according to the most comprehensive analysis yet. The products — Aranesp, Procrit and Epogen — increased the risk of death by 10 percent, a study in Wednesday’s Journal of the American Medical Association indicates. They increased the risk of dangerous blood clots in the lungs or legs by 57 percent. The analysis adds to concerns that have intensified over the past five years, as studies have suggested that the products could fuel tumor growth. The Food and Drug Administration, which added a ‘black box’ warning — its strongest — to the labels last year, is slated to discuss their safety again on March 13.” (02/28/08)
