MN: Mercury reduction compromise reached
St. Paul Pioneer PressPosted: April 27th, 2006 by Thomas L. Knapp
“Minnesota’s three largest coal-fired power plants would have to cut their mercury emissions by 90 percent by 2015 under a compromise agreement that will be announced at noon today at the State Capitol. The deal, reached by Gov. Tim Pawlenty, several lawmakers and utility, business and environmental interests, is more aggressive than a federal timetable that calls for a 70 percent mercury reduction by 2018. It still must be approved by the Legislature. … Under terms of the deal, mercury-control technologies would have to be phased in at various units of the three plants between 2009 and 2015, reducing mercury emissions by 1,000 to 1,200 pounds. The compromise doesn’t appear to address emissions from smaller sources.” (04/27/06)
