“Gov. Phil Bredesen is urging state Senate Republicans, whom he says are ‘flexing their muscles,’ to not kill his Cover Tennessee health insurance proposal. Republicans, who own an 18-14 majority in the Senate, criticized Cover Tennessee recently concerning its long-term funding plan, its possible requirement of an increase in the tobacco tax, and its lack of concrete early stage details. Bredesen responded to some of those criticisms Wednesday, admitting that he is worried about his proposals being ‘caught up in politics’ in the Senate. But he remains optimistic the body will pass Cover Tennessee proposals in the end after ‘a lot of posturing.’ … ‘As I’ve expressed to a couple of them, I understand people wanting to put their mark on things. I understand their wanting to get questions answered. But don’t just throw the whole thing in the trash can because you can,’ Bredesen said.” (04/27/06)
