“The Annenberg Foundation said yesterday that it would donate $20 million to a nonprofit group working to bolster New York City’s small middle and high schools, which are a hallmark of Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg’s effort to turn around the troubled system. The group, New Visions for Public Schools, has helped create 112 of the more than 200 small schools that have opened throughout New York City since 1993. ‘I think that there’s both anecdotal as well as hard evidence now that small schools are producing some very good results for students and teachers and school staff alike,’ said Dr. Gail Levin, executive director of the foundation. ‘These small schools are here to stay. We want to be part of the story that allows them to stay.’ In recent years, Mayor Bloomberg has opened 149 small middle and high schools.” (04/28/06)
