“If you’ve tuned in to the news during the last 36 hours, you’ve seen a story listing ten unconventional influences on obesity in America . Twenty scientists sifted through a hundred studies evaluating contributors to obesity — other than diet and exercise — and determined that ten factors not frequently associated with excess body weight may play a role. They range from the obvious (smoking cessation) to the not-so-obvious (air conditioning). Admittedly, it would be easy to get carried away with the hype and overstate the importance of these findings. But they’re worth bringing up to point out that the science behind obesity is more complex than is commonly imagined. … At least three of the cited factors, however, do seem to reemphasize the importance of physical activity.” (06/28/06)

[…] “Obesity isn’t all about eating and inactivity, says an international group of researchers. Just about everywhere you look, doctors are blaming America’s obesity epidemic on two things: too much food — especially widely marketed fast food and junk food — and too little exercise, with too much time in front of the TV. But we’re paying too much attention to the ‘big two,’ argue David B. Allison, PhD, director of the University of Alabama at Birmingham clinical nutrition research center, and his colleagues. … To stimulate debate, Allison and colleagues suggest 10 other possible causes of obesity. Their article appears in this week’s online edition of the International Journal of Obesity. It’s well accepted that reduced physical activity and fast food are linked to obesity. But the evidence that these are the main causes of obesity is ‘largely circumstantial,’ Allison and colleagues say.” [editor’s note: Yesterday’s MFC featured a sort of “rebuttal” to these contentions. - SAT] (06/29/06) […]
