“Detroit and some of the state’s older school districts may be struggling when it comes to keeping students, but the number of children in Michigan charter schools seems to keep growing. Although it’s not known how many students are in charter schools this year, the number is believed to be nearing 100,000, compared with about 92,000 last year, according to industry counts. And that change is evident in lots of charter schools in metro Detroit. For instance, Riverside Academy in Dearborn has nearly doubled its enrollment, to about 1,100 students this fall, and Southfield’s Bradford Academy — which moved into a 106,000-square-foot, $4.5-million school this year — gained about 400 students.” (09/28/06)
