School choice called too complicated

“The current school-choice system and transportation plan for Seattle Public Schools are overly complicated and costly, and need updating, School Board members agreed Wednesday. But any major changes are at least two years away — and board members cautioned that saving money won’t be their only priority when they look at revamping the plans. Chief among their concerns is that the current school-selection process can be overwhelming and time-consuming, and tends to favor those who can afford to spend dozens of hours researching various academic programs and visiting schools. School Board President Brita Butler-Wall said she once spent 40 hours shopping around to find a middle school for one of her daughters.” (09/28/06)
