“With the recent passage of the Educational Opportunities Act in Iowa and the start of its implementation, school choice is receiving a great deal of attention in our state. The act offers tax credits to donors who fund scholarships that will allow low-income students to attend private schools. Unfortunately, a Sept. 6 Rekha Basu column mischaracterized the extensive public debate surrounding this act and its widespread support. The act clearly appeared on the Legislature’s agenda, and more than 20,000 Iowans contacted their legislators to voice support for its passage. … The act was passed with overwhelming support from legislators of both parties (49-1 in the Senate; 75-19 in the House), demonstrating this is not a partisan issue, but rather a social-justice issue.” (09/27/06)
