“Improve high school math and science instruction is fast shaping up as a big priority. It’s attention that’s as overdue as it is welcome. Most states have long shortchanged their gifted students, paying only lip service to the need to challenge them with rewarding, rigorous courses. And many students shy away from math and science. But the problem goes deeper than that. … American simply can’t afford to sit back in its easy chair and rely on foreign subcontractors to satisfy its appetite for creativity, intellect and innovation. If we’re going to remain dominant, or even competitive, in the global economy, we need to do a much better job of nurturing our own talent.” (02/27/07)
