Activism Opportunity: Sick and Sicker

Sick and Sicker

“This is a feature-length movie in development that explores the ethics and realities of a government take over the medical profession, such as: • Should doctors be imprisoned if they accept payment for their services from patients? • Should the government determine who gets medical care? • Do individuals in countries with “universal health care” really get better care? • Is it true that 46 million Americans are uninsured? • Are big pharmaceutical companies the problem or big government programs? SICK AND SICKER will investigate whether government intervention in the U.S. medical system is the cause of, or the solution to, our problems and whether Canada is really the health care utopia that politicians tell us it is. Criticisms of the U.S. medical system will be analysed and solutions will be discussed with authors and experts across the political spectrum. But this won’t be a dry documentary that will put you to sleep. Logan Darrow Clements will bring the abstract concepts to life in dramatic and surprising ways. If he can show how a monkey with darts can beat the investment return of Social Security then you know it will be a movie you won’t forget. But this movie will not be made unless you help. Here’s how .” (03/17/07)

Disease Mongering Engine launched

News Target

“An online tool allows users to instantly generate fictitious disease names and descriptions based on terminology commonly used in describing psychiatric or behavioral disorders. The ‘’Disease Mongering Engine” randomly generates diseases, disorders and syndromes that sound real, but aren’t. The engine, created by author and natural health guru Mike Adams, is intended as a parody of conventional medicine and the over-diagnosis of Americans with fictitious diseases. ‘Drug companies actually invent fictitious diseases, then profit by selling drugs to treat those fictitious conditions,’ Adams explained.” [editor’s note: Caution, may provoke giggles! - SAT] (03/07/07)

WA: Integrative medicine bill to be presented

American Association for Health Freedom

“American Association for Health Freedom (AAHF) and our Washington state chapter, WA CHOICE are pleased to announce that a groundbreaking nonpartisan bill for integrative practitioners has been introduced in Washington state. Senate Bill 5509, Concerning disciplinary actions for health care providers regulated under chapter 18.130 RCW (click here to read the bill). This is NEW health freedom legislation that addresses the unfair attacks on health care providers simply because they are using a procedure (treatment, diagnostic, philosophy) that someone disagrees with (most are cases where there is no patient harm or even patient complaint). This bill has real ‘teeth’ to it and will offer stronger protection to licensed practitioners from needless investigations and ‘fishing expeditions’ — simply because they are integrative practitioners. This is model language (along with our process) that we intend of using with our state chapters. We have STRONG support from members of the state senate health committee and have ALL but one of the health committee members as supporters (but we still need your help!). Furthermore, the Health & Long Term Care Chair is the main sponsor and other leaders are also cosponsors such as the Majority Whip, the Republican Deputy Leader and Republican Caucus Chair, among others! There is already a hearing scheduled for Thursday, January 25th on this and other related bills and we’ll keep you updated.” (01/20/07)

Stop Congress’s sneak attack on vitamins

Health Sciences Institute

“To paraphrase Mark Twain: No supplements are safe when Congress is in session. And that’s even true of a lame duck Congress like the one that’s now poised to sneak through a bill that can only have a negative impact on dietary supplement consumers. Senate Bill 3546 is titled Dietary Supplement and Non-Prescription Drug Consumer Protection Act. But as any Congress watcher knows, the titles of bills are often quite deceptive. Consumer protection? If driving up supplement prices and narrowing the field of supplement choices is ‘protection,’ then, sure, this is a consumer protection act. In a nutshell, S.3546 is intended to amend the Food, Drug and cosmetic Act, and would require supplement makers and manufacturers of over the counter drugs to report serious adverse events linked to the use of their products. To begin with, this change would be yet another step toward regulating supplements the same way pharmaceuticals are regulated. In other words: A win for drug companies. … What’s most annoying about this bill is that it’s completely unnecessary, because without it, consumers and their doctors will simply do what they already do: Report adverse events directly to the FDA.” (11/28/06)
