COWICHAN, BRITISH COLUMBIA (June 19, 2002): As ISIL member and Indian activist Meaghan Walker Williams has reported in the Freedom Network News, there have been repeated attempts by tribal leaders to impose a 7% sales tax on members of her tribe. Legal requirements are that a referendum be held on such matters, but Chief Harvey Alphonse rammed the tax through anyway in a closed council meeting. Walker Williams purchased gasoline for her car and refused to pay the tax.
"Arrest me!" She demanded." (they didn't).
A demonstration of hundreds of people gathered to protest outside the lavish $3-million dollar tribal headquarters. In case the tribal leaders didn't catch the hint, hundreds of the protesters occupied the band offices, refusing to leave until the tax was repealed. The shaken leaders acquiesced and promised to repeal the tax.
Well, what do you know, they didn't repeal the tax. The following week there was another demonstration with hundreds chanting outside the offices of the leadership. The chief reacted by closing the offices and sending all band government employees home. But when he discovered that the protesters were camping outside all night waiting to greet him in the morning, he fled the island for Vancouver, saying he feared for his life.
Walker-Williams dismissed his fears as ridiculous. Most of the protesters were women with babes in arms.
The matter is to be put to a referendum where it will fail to pass.
