Barun Mitra, president of the Liberty Institute and Julian Simon Center in New Delhi, India was awarded the Sir Anthony Fisher Memorial Award at a meeting of the Atlas Foundation, held in San Francisco from May 1st to 3rd.
The award, which honors new libertarian and classical-liberal think tanks and their work, specifically names a book edited by Mitra entitled, "Population: The Ultimate Resource". In it, Mitra draws from many sources (including Julian Simon's works) in debunking population myths.
Besides the plaque, Mitra received an award check for $10,000 US.
Judges in the award process included such heavyweights as James Buchanan and Henri Lepage.
Mitra, a regular correspondent with ISIL, has in the past been awarded scholarships to our conferences in Berlin, Germany (1998) and San José, Costa Rica (1999).
During his visit to San Francisco, he rendezvoused with ISIL President Vince Miller and ISIL VP Jim Elwood and spent a few hours meeting with Bay Area libertarians at Jeff and Suzanne Riggenbach's "Beer Bust." (a weekly party and informal philosophical jam-fest which often welcomes visitors from abroad).
Mitra has also been working with ISIL director Ken Schoolland to produce Hindi, Bengali and localized English versions of the now-famous The Adventures of Jonathan Gullible: A Free Market Odyssey. Prospects look good for getting this delightful little book approved as a standard text in the public-school system in India.
Mr. Mitra has also been granted a scholarship to attend the Dax, France conference by ISIL, so those who are attending this event will have a chance to meet this outstanding man - definitely one of a number of emerging young superstars in the international movement.
