Libertarians on the Move
in Romania

– The Horia Rusu Foundation –

Valentina Nicolae BUCHAREST – ISIL Rep Valentina Nicolae reports that a new libertarian foundation has just been founded in Romania (on September 18th). The Foundation has been named in honor of Horia Rusu, a prominent Romanian libertarian who passed away last year. (Rusu had attended the 1998 ISIL conference in Berlin where he met and established dialogue with many prominent libertarians – Ed).

Among the founding members are Horia's wife Dorina, plus two other leaders of the Liberal Party (one of them, a successful businessman who is providing financial support for the foundation) and Valentina herself.

The objectives of the members of the new foundation are to spread the ideas of freedom and individualism in Romania, especially among young people, students, etc.

They have launched a monthly newsletter, the first issue of which included a report on the ISIL/LI Bastiat conference in Dax, France, by Valentina – plus an welcoming article by ISIL president Vince Miller.

Valentina had worked as a parliamentary assistant in the Liberal Party with the Horia Rusu foundation principals from (1993-1996) and had introduced them to the ideas of Libertarianism and told of her activity in ISIL (including her experiences at all ISIL world conferences from the 1992 conference in Poprad, (then) Czechoslovakia – to the present. She reports that she gave them lots of ISIL materials.

The members of the Horia Rusu foundation are reportedly very interested in establishing a link with ISIL and others in our network.

Included among their projects is a project to publish Libertarian books. In this area, Valentina has already translated and had published many books in Romania, including: Ken Schoolland's The Adventures of Jonathan Gullible, Mary Ruwart's Healing Our World, Christian Michel's "La Liberté," Walter Block's Defending the Undefendable and Ayn Rand's Anthem. She is currently engaged in the translation of Rand's Atlas Shrugged.

Congratulations from ISIL on the founding of Horia Rusu foundation. We wish you every success in your endeavors.

The Ludwig von Mises Institute – Romania

To add to the explosion of libertarian activities in Romania, Cristian Comånescu, an ISIL member who spoke at our Berlin conference, has founded the Ludwig von Mises Institute – Romania. Included in their program is an on-going dialogue on their new website:
http://www.misesromania.org/

Comånescu informs us that their teaching and on-line programs in Austrian economics are being organized along three levels:

  1. Introductory,
  2. Graduate and
  3. Advanced levels.

Comånescu states: "Within the widely conceived rationalist Western tradition, we believe the modern Mises-Rothbard Austrian School sets the framework for a kind of unfolding 'Copernican Revolution' in epistemology, law, and economics (with everything consistently revolving around the relentless logic of Mises' Human Action." [which Comanescu refers to as 'the economic Bible of civilized man']).

MisesRomania.org already offers Mises' classic 1958 Buenos Aires introductory lectures, and three additional defining Mises papers. Comånescu concludes: "Our own experience with publishing and circulation limitations here has persuaded us that e-technology is about the only sure way to swiftly and truly reach a relevant audience (at moderate cost). We offer highly skilled translators, and are in addition, capable of understanding and transmitting online every nuance of the ideas on liberty – all over this confused country."

Any parties wanting to find more information on the Romanian Ludwig von Mises Institute – or interested in supporting this important work may contact Cristian at: contact@MisesRomania.org.

Congratulations also to Cristian on this important move toward liberty.
