– The Adventures of –
JONATHAN GULLIBLE
New Awards, New Progress!
by James R. Elwood
ISIL director Ken Schoolland and his acclaimed fable "The Adventures of Jonathan Gullible: A Free Market Odyssey" are continuing to show the way towards developing a powerful, effective global liberty movement.
This book – which has been a big hit with young people – has now been printed in 23 languages – all through a worldwide network of dedicated libertarians – most working with extremely modest budgets.
We are delighted to announce that the Jonathan Gullible book is continuing to win awards and endorsements, and that the pace of publishing projects is rapidly gathering momentum.
The Leonard E. Read Award
"The Adventures of Jonathan Gullible: A Free Market Odyssey" has been named the winner of the first annual Leonard E. Read Book Award for Excellence in Economic Education from the Foundation for Economic Education (FEE) in Irvington-on-Hudson, New York.
In announcing this new award for books on economic education, Mark Skousen, FEE's president, said, "Schoolland's story is the perfect choice for the first Leonard E. Read Book Award. Leonard Read, FEE's founder [1946], spent his life writing, publishing, and teaching the basics of liberty and sound economics in a way that every individual could comprehend. The Adventures of Jonathan Gullible is a simple, powerful, and amusing way to illustrate the principles of political economy. It's a combination of the satirists Frédéric Bastiat and Jonathan Swift."
The Leavey Award
Ken Schoolland received another honor recently from the Freedoms Foundation at Valley Forge.
"The Adventures of Jonathan Gullible has been selected to receive a Leavey Award for Excellence in Private Enterprise Education. Celebrating its 25th anniversary, this special program, endowed by The Thomas and Dorothy Leavey Foundation, permits Freedoms Foundation to honor educators for their innovative efforts to help young people better understand the function and benefits of America's private-enterprise system." – Russell K. Schulz, Director, Freedoms Foundation at Valley Forge, Pennsylvania.
Ken and the JG book had earlier won two George Washington Honor Medals from the Freedoms Foundation for economics education and public communication.
JG E-Book Now Up!
The English version of "The Adventures of Jonathan Gullible" is now on-line, thanks to the hard work of Sieg Pedde in London, Ontario, Canada. At the moment, this is a "beta" version. A final version for on-line sale should be ready soon. French and Spanish e-books will also be up soon at the same site.
As announced by Sieg: "The JG ebook site at
http://www.phoenixaccrual.com/gullible/index.html is now up. Ken approved the last changes. We added a pulldown menu in the upper right corner called Freedom Links and have included the 'official' JG site there as well as 21 other links."
New Features on JG Website
ISIL recently forwarded funds to help with further development of the Jonathan Gullible website at www.jonathangullible.com. There is a lot of new information there about the international publishing projects, book reviews, and photographs of JG publishers. And lots more coming!
ISIL Funds New International
Jonathan Gullible Book Projects
ISIL's Jonathan Gullible Book Fund recently funded three more international publishing projects for the The Adventures of Jonathan Gullible: A Free Market Odyssey. They are:
KENYA: James Shikwati Shikuku of the Inter-Region Economic Network in Nairobi has produced an on-line version of JG in Swahili at www.irenkenya.org, and is moving ahead on a print edition of the book.
We also got word that he and some student friends are organizing a play called "The Trial of JG", where Jonathan is put on trial for his free-market beliefs. It is due to be staged at the Manseno University in Nairobi in May. This is also being funded by ISIL.
James has been named as ISIL Rep for Kenya. (See profile article by our friend Larry Reed of the Mackinac Center for Public Policy about James's impressive work in East Africa). You can find the article on the internet at:
http://www.mackinac.org/4099
NIGERIA:
New ISIL Rep Agwu Amogu is producing a print edition of JG in Nigeria's localized (Pidgin) English. This is a direct result of Agwu and Ken meeting at last year's ISIL/LI World Conference in Dax, France.
MONGOLIA:
Dulmaa Bataar is going to press with a Mongolian edition. This project had been in the works for several years, but was accelerated when Dulmaa's brother Khurel met Ken at the Dax Conference.
Help Jonathan Keep Going!
Several more international projects require outside assistance. Jonathan Gullible translations are completed but need help for printing in Bulgarian, Montenegran, Slovakian, Turkish, Ukrainian, and Urdu, plus new editions in Romania and Russia. The new Romanian edition is now on line and the new Russian edition will be up very soon.
This has been an extremely effective tool for youth outreach, so it is vital to keep these projects moving on to completion! We are seeking to raise $24,000 ($3000 per project) for ISIL's Jonathan Gullible Book Fund to continue the global spread of this wonderful little book.
Contributions to ISIL are tax-deductible in the US.
Thanks again to everyone involved for these great achievements – and a special vote of thanks to those of you who have previously supported the JG Book Fund.
Jim Elwood is Executive Vice-President of ISIL.
