Another Great Year for
Jonathan Gullible

The international publishing phenomenon of ISIL director Ken Schoolland's award-winning fable The Adventures of Jonathan Gullible: A Free Market Odyssey continued to reach new heights during 2007.

The book has now been published in print in an astounding 43 languages! There's also an on-line French edition. Ten more language translations have either been completed and publishers are being sought, or translations are nearing completion. And as a further sign of progress, second updated editions are also coming out in several countries.

The hugely-popular flash animation The Philosophy of Liberty, based on the epilogue to the JG book, has jumped up to 20 languages on-line, with many more in progress.

As in the past, ISIL's conferences and ongoing networking, and the financial support by ISIL members, has made many of these successes possible!

NEW LANGUAGES IN PRINT

The three all-new book editions this year include:

XXX

Georgian – following their meeting at the 2006 ISIL World Conference in Prague, Paata Sheshelidze, President of the high-powered New Economic School in Tbilisi, Georgia, translated Ken's book and put up an on-line Georgian version early this year.
The book version was launched while Ken Schoolland was in Georgia in July to teach at the first Georgian Liberty English Camp.   paatasheshelidze[at]cdu.ge

Nepali – Prakash Thapa of the American Library in Kathmandu wrote to Ken, "We have already published the Nepali version of the book [this summer]. We are ready to organize book discussion programs in four cities outside Kathmandu Valley i.e. Biratnagar, Birgunj, Bhairahawa, and Pokhara. . . . We would also like to organize a Digital Video Conference (DVC) program with you soon to release the book and to share your knowledge with Nepali scholars."   ThapaP[at]state.gov

This follows on the serial publication of Jonathan Gullible in English over the past year in Nepal's The Boss business magazine. This effort was organized by Robin Sitoula, General Secretary of the Youth Initiative robs@mail.com.np, and those of Editor Charu Chadha Rizal charu@theboss.com.np and Rakesh Wadhwa. Charu reports the JG serialization was quite popular among their readers.

Turkish – The launch of the Turkish JG book occurred at the first Liberty English Camp of the Association for Liberal Thinking, held in the coastal resort of Cesme. Ken was a teacher at this camp as well. The translation and publication was organized by Bugra Kalkan liberte[at]liberte.com.tr, of the ALF, who had been to the ISIL Prague conference on a scholarship and met Ken Schoolland there. ISIL members contributed to this project.

Another sign of progress in the global spread of the Adventures of Jonathan Gullible is that a growing number of updated second editions are being produced in various countries.

Mongolian – Dr. Batchuluun Baldandorj batchuluun[at]libertari.mn, with the sponsorship of P. Tsenguun, Chairman of the Mongolian Libertarian Foundation, published the new Mongolian edition of the book, this time based on the annotated UK Commentary edition that was originally prepared by Janette Eldridge in South Africa. It has already been a resounding success.

Recently, Batchuluun reported: "Three weeks ago I went to the biggest book shop in Ulaanbaatar. The salesman told me that JG is the second bestseller among the social science and humanities books." JG is being used as the basis for discussion in a growing number of student seminars. This is yet another project that evolved out of meetings at the ISIL 2006 Prague conference.

Polish – Krzysztof Haladus krzysztof[at]haladus.pl has published a spectacular updated hardback edition of JG with more than 40 full-color, beautifully-drawn illustrations.

Four months after publication, Kris wrote: "There have been 1300 copies sold! . . . The book can be bought in every bookstore in Poland, including the biggest. The final price of the book is about $14 USD. Now I am working on an adaptation of Janette's and Ken's comments for Polish schools. I am going to publish these comments as a separate guide for teachers and propose using it in Polish schools."

The new Polish edition was printed with the highest-quality material, cloth bookmark attached, plastic wrapped for protection, with a CD inside with audio in both English and Polish! The illustrations were computer-generated, and will be available for other editions at a very low price. Kris is now working on an English graphic novel edition. More on this project at www.aspektpublishing.com. Yet another Prague connection (and Kris also attended Williamsburg this year).

THEATRICAL PRODUCTIONS

Stage productions based on the Adventures of Jonathan Gullible are also spreading.

Nigeria – Adedayo Thomas alhadedayothomas[at]yahoo.com and Paul Ugbede, a student from the University of Jos in northern Nigeria have published "A Letter from Jonathan Gullible," an English-language play based on the JG book. It is already been used in theater arts classes at several universities and high schools and is about to be produced on stage. Theater is quite popular in Africa, so this form of communication has great potential there. The play was published last winter with assistance from ISIL's Jonathan Gullible Book Fund.

Slovakia – Matus Posvanc has been working on a multimedia theatrical production of JG in Bratislava. "According to JG," wrote Mat, "we have finished a second [Slovakian] version of the play after a meeting with the professional director who made some comments. . . . I am planning to translate what we produce into English during the following months."

MORE FLASH ANIMATION
LANGUAGES

The on-line Philosophy of Liberty flash animation, based on the epilogue of the Jonathan Gullible book, continues to rapidly advance in the number of available languages.

The count now stands at 20, with these six languages having been added during 2007 – Danish, Italian, Polish, Lithuanian, Somali, and Hungarian. Ten more are in preparation.

NEW AWARDS FOR
JONATHAN GULLIBLE

In June, the Bray-Conn Foundation invited Ken Schoolland to be the keynote speaker at their annual dinner in Salt Lake City and speak about the Jonathan Gullible progress. Bray-Conn, an investment company, sponsors educational programs on liberty and capitalism. They showed their recent purchase – one of the original copies of the Declaration of Independence.

Dick Rowland of the Grassroots Institute of Hawaii and a long-time supporter of JG, presented his organizations George Washington Award to Ken Schoolland and the Jonathan Gullible project at their 2007 awards dinner this fall.

In April, Ken and JG won third prize in a contest held at the annual conference of the Association of Private Enterprise Educators and the Market Based Management Institute, held in Cancun, Mexico.

And last and far from least, by a vote of the ISIL board and past winners of the ISIL Freedom Torch Award and the Marshall Bruce Evoy Memorial Award, Ken Schoolland was awarded the 2007 Evoy Award at the ISIL World Conference in Williamsburg, Virginia. This was in recognition of his considerable expense of time, effort and sometimes personal funds in coordinating the far-flung network of Jonathan Gullible projects and for his exceptional enthusiasm and talent in promoting liberty around the world. Ken was teaching at the first Liberty English Camp in Turkey at the time of the award presentation, so a speakerphone was set up and the Williamsburg audience was able to hear Ken's happy response to receiving the award. Mary Lou Gutscher, a trustee of the MBE award made the announcement.

JG LANGUAGES IN PROGRESS

Various types of Jonathan Gullible projects are in progress in 13 languages. These are: French (available on-line, book publisher being sought), Tagalog, Slovakian (book published, and a theatrical version in development), Slovenian (serialization in progress, book in development), Afrikaans, Azeri, Visayan, Swedish, Estonian, Kashubian (local language in Poland), Arabic, Haitian Creole, Tamil, Ukrainian, Russian (two updated book editions in progress), Romanian (updated book edition nearly complete), and Hebrew.

There is a much more extensive Fall 2007 "JG Update" report – with lots of photos – now on-line at www.jonathangullible.com. And you can get on Ken Schoolland's e-mail list by contacting him at schoollak001[at]hawaii.rr.com.

Many of the past Jonathan Gullible publications in the poorer regions of the world have been made possible by the contributions of ISIL members.

We encourage you to continue to contribute to the remarkable worldwide progress of this extraordinarily effective teaching tool for liberty by contributing to ISIL's Jonathan Gullible Fund. Your ISIL contributions are tax-deductible in the USA.
