The latest figures that I have seen are that at least 80,000 Americans are now on FBI and Homeland Security's red-flagged "no fly" lists with another 325,000 on yellow-flagged "watch lists" (the latter being subject to body and luggage searches). Hundreds more names are added every week.
The criteria for being put in these lists is secret, and there is no official procedure for getting off a list.
Government propaganda for these lists implies that only "known terrorists" and terror "suspects" are on the lists, but the reality is far different.
KTVU News in San Francisco recently reported that a 4-year old child was recently put on the list because he had a similar name to a terrorist suspect.
The director of the critical documentary, "Bush's Brain", was also put on the list, as was a 70-year-old Catholic nun who publishes an anti-war newspaper, and a popular Los Angeles comic who parodied Bush.
No, there are not 325,000 or even 80,000 terrorists in the U.S. But judging from recent public opinion polls, there are tens of millions of opponents of George Bush, who apparently are prime candidates for the no-fly list.
Also the same lists will soon be used to prevent U.S. citizens from boarding ships, buses, and trains, and from getting driver's licenses and jobs.
We are seeing nothing less than the emergence of a Soviet-styled internal passport system in the U.S., with opponents of tyranny turned into non-people.
The only solution is to abolish the lists, the new national IDs, and the TSA before they abolish our freedom.
